Phoenix

Holcim Innovation Center, Lyon, France · 2023 · Block Research Group, ETH Zurich, with ZHA CODE

Striatus 2.0. A permanent footbridge of 3D-printed concrete blocks, assembled without mortar or reinforcement.

Phoenix, "Striatus 2.0", is a permanent, unreinforced masonry footbridge of 3D-printed concrete blocks assembled without mortar or reinforcement, built at the Holcim Innovation Centre in Lyon. It partly recycles the blocks of the original Striatus. A new Holcim concrete mix with locally sourced and recycled materials, and less single-use falsework, cut its CO₂ emissions by 25% compared to Striatus. Its shallower geometry needs no steps, which makes it more accessible.
